What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are derived from various parts of plants using a special proprietary low-pressure, low-temperature steam distillation system that protects and preserves the quality of the oils.
Essential oils are not actually oils, but are rather concentrated liquid forms of the plant from which they were distilled. They are often used by either placing the oil directly on the skin or diffusing the oil into the air to allow it to enter the body through the lungs.
Essential oils are available as both “singles” and as “blends”. Singles are a specific plant (such as rose or ylang ylang) while blends are mixtures of two or more single oils. These blends are often based on a theme (such as Citrus Fresh or Immupower).
Essential Oils work differently from any other natural substance. Their unique features are that they:
- Pass easily through our skin and cell membranes.
- Diffuse through the entire body within half an hour.
- Go directly to the brain through the olfactory bulb.
- Affect our feelings and thoughts because smell is our most emotional sense.
- Perform multiple healing functions because of their structural complexity.
This is why one essential oil can do so many different things for you all at once—physically, emotionally and mentally—with just a few drops in the air or on your skin.
Background Information
Essential Oils and Aromatherapy have been around in one form or another since the beginning of civilization. Aromatherapy is the art, and science, of using essential oils extracted from aromatic plants to give a healthy response. Essential Oils can be combined with massage oil or bath salts to enhance health and beauty. The Essential Oil taken from plants and used in Aromatherapy have been described as their “life force”—they are essential to the plants’ biological process, as well as being the substance which gives them their scent.

Currently at herbs etc, we carry a variety of essential oils, and base oils for dilution. Our House Blend is a combination of 10 base oils formulated by our owner.
